Not long after San Miguel del Bado was founded in 1794, settlers and officials saw the plains near the Rio Gallina to the North as an outlet for expansion, and in 1821 Luis Maria C. de Baca petitioned for a land grant at Las Vegas Grandes “the big meadows.” His petition was granted two years later in 1823. The formal name of the community that resulted from settlement was Nuestra Senora de Los Delores de Las Vegas Grandes (Our Lady of the Sorrows of the Great Meadows).
