Luna County
Luna County sits in southwestern New Mexico. During the late 19th century, rivalry between Silver City and Deming was intense, and agitation for division of Grant County began as early as 1888. Between 1881, when Deming, the county seat, was founded in honor of the promoter of the Southern Pacific Railway, and 1901, bills were introduced into the territorial legislature for the creation of a new county. Logan or Florida were proposed as names, but when the county was finally created on March 16, 1901, it was named for Don Solomon Luna, a prominent political figure during New Mexico’s Territorial Period. Luna is the center of vast grazing lands in southwestern New Mexico and the old Butterfield Trail of the cattle drives ran across Luna County in Deming.
