De Baca County

De Baca County sits in east-central New Mexico, with its county seat at Fort Sumner. De Baca County was named for Ezequiel Cabeza de Baca, New Mexico’s second Governor under statehood. The county supports large cattle and sheep ranches as well as farming. The irrigation from the Pecos River makes this livestock and agriculture possible. The area is famous for holding the burial site of William Booney, alias, “Billy the Kid.” Booney is buried in the old government cemetery seven miles southeast of Fort Sumner.
