Monticello

In 1874 two French brothers, Alphonse and Aristide Bourguet, immigrated to the U.S. Later they followed their aunt, Sarah Bourguet, to New Mexico, where she'd been living in Socorro since 1850. The brothers settled in Caņada de Alamosa, where their descendants still live. In 1892, Aristide applied for a post office; the name he submitted was Monticello (Caņada de Alamosa would have been rejected as too long and violating the policy current then of postal names being one word). The Bourguets say Aristide chose Monticello because Alphonse Bourguet had served as postmaster in Monticello, NY, after arriving in the U.S.
