Ruidoso
Dowlin had been a officer in the NM Volunteers during the Civil War in New Mexico. Later he became post trader at Fort Stanton, where he had the right to sell liquor. Because of problems this created with the Indians, the post commander ordered Dowlin to move his operations. Dowlin prospered in his new location, acquiring not only a mill but also a store and other property. In 1877, however, he was killed by a former employee. When a post office was established, the community took the name Ruidoso, for the Rio Ruidoso, the "noisy river" running through the town. It since has become a tourist and vacation center.
