Comments: Padre Antonio Jose Martinez, Cura de Taos, gave an important and long sermon at the church of \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"La Parroquia\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" in Santa Fe (before the cathedral was built)on the occasion of the eleventh anniversary of Mexican Independence. He spoke of many things, but one worthy of special note is his comparison of the Macabees(freedom fighters against the cultural and religious domination of Greek occupation)and Padre Hidalgo to Jesus Christ in his role as liberator. This sermon is in 1877 Biografia del Presbitero by Santigo Valdez, located in the RITCH Collection of the Huntington Libriary near Los Angeles. It was first translated into English in PROPHETS DENIED HONOR published by Orbis Press,and later in a book on 19th Century Sermons by Father Thomas Steele, SJ. It is also generously quoted in RELUCTANT DAWN (Amazon.com) by Fr. Juan Romero
