The following elements apply to all Office of the State Historian essays, with some minor exceptions.
Originality. We are soliciting original pieces of writing, which do not have copyright restrictions.
Audience. Address the article to both the general reader and the specialist, with the emphasis on what a well-educated non specialist would easily grasp. Avoid, if possible, references to content that would soon date the article.
Style, grammar, etc.
Submission Guidelines
- Style will be based on the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th ed. Footnotes or citations within text are not accepted. Instead use “Sources used:” at the end of the essay.
- Each essay shall be submitted in both paper and electronic (diskette or CD) copy. The electronic version shall be in Microsoft Word format, Times New Roman font, 12 point. The paper copy shall be made from the electronic copy, and the essayist shall be responsible for ensuring that the paper and electronic copies are identical. The essayist shall review all material and ensure that it is accurate in content, format and style.
- Include a cover page with the submission title, author’s name, mailing address, email address, daytime and evening telephone number.
- Authors are required to cooperate with editing and fact-checking during editorial review.
